Even though Ypsilanti is a relatively large city with a population of around 74,000 people, it still oozes that tiny-town feel around every corner. From the friendly neighbors to the small diners and community events, everything about Ypsi screams “small town”—in all the best ways possible.

 

The food scene is next level

No matter what you’re craving, Ypsilanti has it—soul food, burgers, brunch, sandwiches, pastries, fro-yo and so much more. The area is home to award-winning restaurants and bars, all serving something delicious and unique. It’s home to some fantastic craft beer…

There’s no doubt about it, Ypsilanti is a beer-loving city. Renowned breweries like 734 Brewing Company, The Arbor Brewing Company, Cultivate Coffee & TapHouse, and more all call this hip city home! But if traditional beer isn’t really your thing, Ypsi has something for you too: kombucha beer. This bubbly, gut-friendly drink is also pretty popular here, especially from Unity Vibrations, a local kombucha brewery.

We couldn’t talk about Ypsilanti without at least mentioning the booming coffee scene here. Popular coffee shops and roasters like Hyperion Coffee Co., Biggby Coffee, Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea, Cross Street Coffee, B-24’s Espresso Bar and the aforementioned Cultivate Coffee & TapHouse are all beloved Ypsi institutions. There’s no shortage of green spaces

Whether you’re perusing bustling districts like Depot Town, downtown and College Heights or exploring one of the many parks throughout Ypsilanti, there are plenty of excuses to get outside. In all of those parks, you’ll find playgrounds, golf courses, stables, bike trails, basketball courts, disc golf courses, an observatory, a water park, picturesque bridges and so much more!

 

There are plenty of great educational opportunities

With Ann Arbor right next door, many forget that Ypsilanti is also home to some spectacular educational opportunities and world-class colleges! Eastern Michigan University, which draws thousands of students every year, is a beautiful gem in Ypsilanti. In fact, it was listed on U.S. New’s 2020 list of the best colleges in the United States! And if you aren’t quite ready for a four-year university yet, Washtenaw Community College is also a great choice.

 

One word: shopping

Unbeknownst to many, Ypsilanti has a fantastic shopping scene! Award-winning antique shops, quirky novelty and artisan shops and high fashion clothing stores— matter what you’re in the market for, you’ll be able to find it here.

Whether you have a family or are planning to start one soon, Ypsi is a great choice. Thanks to the beautiful parks system, quiet neighborhoods, amazing annual community events and educational attractions, Ypsilanti has garnered a reputation as a fantastic place to raise a family.

Ypsilanti was recently named one of the best cities in the United States for singles by Value Penguin and we aren’t surprised! All of the things that make Ypsi so desirable for families are great for young professionals as well. Plus, the growing economy, fantastic nightlife and thriving cultural attractions are just cherries on top for those who aren’t looking to settle down just yet.

 

The community events are unbeatable

From historic movie theaters to eclectic art studios—there’s always something to do and explore in the Ypsilanti area. Usually one of our favorite ways to spend a day in the area is by attending one of the city’s many festivals! Are you a fan of The King of Rock and Roll? Don’t miss Michigan Elvisfest in July! A craft beer enthusiast? The Michigan Summer Beer Festival is for you. Obsessed with everything Halloween? ypsiGLOW is a local favorite. While many of these events have been canceled this year due to COVID-19, we’re looking forward to attending these iconic festivities in the future!

 

Ypsi history is fascinating

If living in a place with a rich history is important to you, look no further. While Detroit might be the first city that pops into your mind when you think of historical destinations in Michigan, Ypsilanti also offers an interesting heritage and a dedicated group of historians and archivists that are just as interested in it as you will be. Did you know that Ypsilanti played a major role in WWII at the Willow Run Bomber plant—which was home to many real-life Rosie-the-Riveters? And it also laid claim to the very last Hudson dealership. While it may offer the perfect small-town feeling, Ypsi is also packed full of renowned cultural activities that you won’t want to miss. From the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum and the Michigan Firehouse Museum to the Dreamland Theater and the Ypsilanti Symphony, there’s no shortage of things to see and do here.
