New Theater Coming to Saline

The first movie theater in Saline was The Liberty, owned by local business man Fred Zimmerman. It started in the 1920s and brought the silent movies to the big screen. For many years, The Liberty enjoyed success but in 1929, business began to drop off significantly and Zimmerman was forced to draw the final curtain on May 17, 1930. The exact location of the theater is not well documented but is believed to have been in the 100 block of Michigan Avenue in beautiful downtown Saline.

The Saline Theater was dedicated July 1, 1938 in what is now Benny’s Bakery on W. Michigan Avenue. The 270 seat venue was greeted with much anticipation and Salinians welcomed the new form of entertainment.  The remodel took months and on opening day, a chorus of ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaaahs’ was heard throughout the town. They offered daily matinees and evening shows.  Children’s tickets were 10 cents and an adult ticket was a mere quarter.
