HAIR & OTHER STORIES: URBAN BUSH WOMEN
JANUARY 12

Hair & Other Stories is a multidisciplinary evening-length work that addresses matters of race, gender identity, and economic inequality through the lens of physical appearance, including the cultural significance of African-American women’s hair. Weaving contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora, this astonishing troupe performs innovative, exciting works that bring untold stories to life.

2018 MLK CELEBRATIONJanuary 15

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, which occurred on April 4, 1968, along with the founding of the Martin Luther King Memorial Center in Atlanta 50 years ago. On Monday, January 20, 1986, the United States observed the first national holiday honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is also the day that Eastern Michigan University hosted its first MLK President’s Luncheon under the leadership of the late President John W. Porter.

As EMU commemorates the 32nd anniversary of this auspicious celebration, they welcome Joy-Ann Reid as Keynote Speaker. Joy-Ann Reid is a national correspondent for MSNBC, host of “AM Joy” and “The Reid Report”, and the author of the book Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide (William Morrow). Reid is the former Managing Editor of theGrio.com, a daily online news and opinion platform devoted to delivering stories and perspectives that reflect and affect African-American audiences. Reid is also a former talk radio producer and host for Radio One and previously served as an online news editor for the NBC affiliate WTVJ in Miramar, Florida.

2018 NATIONS CUP AAA HOCKEY TOURNAMENTJANUARY 19 – 21

The Nations Cup returns to Ann Arbor! In this tournament, teams wear their Country’s jerseys with pride and battle the opposition for bragging rights. The points for each victory go towards each Nation’s total amount, rather than just a win or a loss for the individual team.


41st ANN ARBOR FOLK FESTIVALJANUARY 26– 27

Get ready to Find Your Folk! Presented by Ford Motor Company Fund, the annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival, a fundraiser for The Ark, returns to Hill Auditorium for two dynamic and different nights of folk and roots music on Friday, January 26, and Saturday, January 27, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. each night.

The Folk Festival will celebrate its 41st year with a selection of the world’s finest traditional and contemporary performers. Each night includes a blend of well-known and up-and-coming artists, providing you with an opportunity to hear artists you know and love while discovering great new talent.


WinterFestJANUARY 27

Winterfest is a ‘different’ kind of winter festival hosted by Saline Main Street and participating restaurants, shops, churches, and community organizations! The activities are scattered throughout a four-block area in the heart of Downtown Saline. There are many crazy indoor activities as well as numerous outdoor activities. Winterfest is fun for the whole family; kids, teens, adults, and grandparents. There is something for everyone, from mild to wild.


MOZART BIRTHDAY BASHJANUARY 27

Chad Burrow is recognized as one of the premiere clarinetists of his generation. Mozart’s birthday bash will have his music come to life in front of your ears. Music will include Fellman Reflections on Mozart: Big Bend, Symphony No. 1, Clarinet Concerto, Symphony No. 41.
This is sure to be a delightful homage to Mozart.
