Our favorite part of the cooler months is the scents. Crisp apples, warm pumpkins, juicy cranberries, soft linen, crackling campfires—we could list them for days. With just a flick of a match, you can turn your entire home into the perfect autumn oasis. So, do yourself a favor this season and purchase a fall-themed candle from a local Ann Arbor company to help set the cozy mood. One of our favorite indie candle brands in Michigan is Green Daffodil Soy Candleworks! They offer a wide variety of scents, with special themed candles coming out every month, in tins and glasses of varying sizes. Click here to peruse their current offerings, which includes scents like “Pumpkin”, “Pictured Rocks Campfire” and more.  You can find their candles online or at Found Gallery in Ann Arbor.

A sweater from Verbena

It’s finally sweater weather! Now that we can finally wear cold-weather clothing, we’re dying to get out and shop ’til we drop at local A2 boutiques. One of our favorites is Verbena, a women’s clothing store selling a variety of stylish everyday items, including face masks and loungewear. Knit sweaters, cozy sweat-sets and cushy cardigans await you at this popular shopping destination. Click here to get a preview at their current stock or to order your fall wardrobe online.

You’re going to need a few new throw pillows to go with your new blanket! Cue Roeda Studio is an Ann Arbor destination for handmade magnets and other home decor. They always have several adorable throw pillows on display in their Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids stores. Stop in for a few, but don’t forget to grab a few locally made magnets while you’re at it! They are seriously strong and make fantastic gifts.

If you don’t snuggle up under the covers with a cup of tea and a good book on a cool day—is it even fall? Make your cozy weekend mornings better with a locally curated tea blend from Arbor Teas! Black, green, white, oolong, pu-erh, rooibos, herbal, decaf and more, they have a loose leaf tea blend for every occasion. And if you’re new to the tea world, they also sell a variety of brewing equipment so that you can make the perfect cup whenever you want. If you’re looking for some fall-worthy selections, their staff recommends the Organic Masala Chai Black Tea and the Organic Ginger Chili Tisane!

Or a bag of fresh coffee from RoosRoast

If coffee is much more your speed, then you’ll need a bag of freshly roasted coffee to spruce up your early fall mornings. RoosRoast is hands down one of the best coffee roasters in Michigan and word of this has reached as far as Portland, San Francisco and Manhattan. With their Loring Smart Roaster, they use 80% less energy than similar roasters and still create outstanding coffees. Stop in for a cup of Joe (and a few pastries) for yourself and leave with a bag of freshly roasted coffee to brew at home.

This downtown shop might be known for their extensive plant and garden offerings, but when we’re in the market for a new coffee mug, DHG is our go-to. They have a massive selection of home and kitchen products, from oven mitts to kettles to hand-painted dishes from Turkey. One of our favorite collections offered at the store is their Polish Pottery section, which includes hundreds of colorful mugs, perfect for tea, coffee, water or anything else you plan on sipping on this season.

Socks from Bivouac

Is there anything cozier than a good pair of socks? We didn’t think so. The next time you find yourself in need of a new pair, head to Bivouac, an Ann Arbor boutique selling clothing items for the whole family. Whether you’re in the market for a funky pair with unicorn seahorses on them, or simple knit beauties to keep your feet warm on a cold day, they’ve got you covered.

A hot bath, an at-home facial, a revitalizing hair treatment—we can’t think of a better way to spend a cold afternoon. If you want to keep your spa products local, head to Vosenna, a new indie cosmetic and skincare company located right here in Ann Arbor. All of their products are made in the USA, not tested on animals and are as ethically conscious as possible. While they focus primarily on makeup, they also sell face serums, bath bombs, foot fizzies and pedicure foot scrubs. So sit back, relax and get ready for a cozy, self-care day.

A few new records from Encore Records

For some, cozy means a warm blanket and a good cup of tea. For others, it’s tidying up your home on a Saturday morning listening to a fantastic record. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to explore Encore Records, one of Ann Arbor’s favorite record shops. Encore Records is home to thousands of new and used vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and more. Due to the pandemic, this hometown spot has been struggling. Click here to donate to their GoFundMe page.

As well as a few good books from Literati Bookstore

Candles, tea, blankets and books is a dynamite combination that just keeps on giving. If social distancing for more than six months has taken a toll on your home library, you might need to make a trip to a local bookstore. Luckily, because Ann Arbor is one of the independent bookstore capitals of the country, we don’t think you’ll have a problem finding one. One of our favorites is Literati Bookstore, a warm and inviting bookish destination that has been drawing literary lovers to A2 for longer than we remember. While their shop is currently closed to the public, you can still order your books online and pick them up curbside.

Some seasonal soap from Little Flower Soap Shop

One of the smallest ways to pamper yourself is by investing in a new bar of fancy soap. Little Flower Soap Shop, one of our favorite independent online stores in the area, creates incredible bars of soap, lip balms, room sprays, candles and more to help cozify your home. This season, indulge in soap scents like Coffee Bean, Orange Clove and Woodsman which will add a little fall spice to your hand washing routine.

Sometimes the most useful products are the ones you make yourself! Head to Spun, a local yarn shop, and pick up a few varieties to use in scarves, sweaters, socks and more. If you don’t know how to knit—no problem! Spun also hosts a variety of knitting classes to help get you started. And, if you just need a little advice during a project, Spun’s own Annri offers free, 15-minute online help sessions.
