This Friday we are featuring  500 Highland Road, Ann Arbor. We asked Jean Wedemeyer to tell us a bit about her new listing. Read what she had to say!

Wow, it’s hard to top this one. Designed and built in 1921 by Dean of the UM School of Architecture Wells Bennett, for his family, this home is loaded with original details and spiffed with great updates.  Find it nestled into a large lot with mature plantings, charming inside spaces and in the back, a terrific, private, Trex and Bluestone patio.

Q. Please describe the architectural style of the home.

500 Highland Road, with its yellow shingle exterior, could be called a Cape Cod and more! The first floor has everything you need, its lovely traditional living and dining room, family room, full bath, and eat-in kitchen are augmented by a primary bedroom and full bath. Upstairs, two additional bedrooms share a third full bath and there is bonus space over the family room.

Q. Please describe any distinctive features of the home.

Two great fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the family room, make for plenty of great gathering space. The kitchen has been updated and includes a custom banquette, complete with storage and heater! And the back patio is large and secluded – a wonderful spot throughout spring, summer, and fall.

Q. Please describe any notable renovations or upgrades.

The kitchen has been remodeled and a new first floor full primary bath added. Hardwood floors have been refinished, windows restored, insulation added, and there is fresh exterior paint.

Q. Please describe what views the new homeowner will be able to enjoy.

The front porch and patio, bordered by a lovely garden, offer a quiet view of the large sloping front yard. In the back, privacy is the word on the patio with its own perennial garden.

Q. Is there a ‘fun fact’ about the home you’d like to share?

In the family room, the mantle is buttressed by small decorative corbels, each depicting a faculty member of the UM School of Architecture during Wells Bennett’s tenure as Dean.

Q. Please describe the neighborhood and why someone might enjoy living in the area.

500 Highland Road is a short walk to the Arb and just a ways from Gallup Park. The lovely and sought-after Geddes/Arb area is known for its quiet treelined streets. They offer a pleasant walking alternative to the Arb itself and a nice contrast to the nearby bustle of campus.

Q. Is there anything else about this listing that you would like to share?

A little bit of history, A+ location, and lots of updates. The price has just been reduced to $899,000. This home is a gem – come have a look!
