Why Shop Local at a Farmers Market?
Michigan is one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the country and is hailed as a leader in producing everything from apples to tart cherries, as well as blueberries, asparagus, cucumbers, and more! Many local restaurants rely on these staples to serve patrons. And residents can buy their ingredients straight from the source at a local farmers market if they want to put their home chef skills to the test.
Supporting local agriculture is a great way to show your appreciation for farmers and help the local economy. Fresh, local produce can be more affordable than options at your local grocery store and is generally considered healthier, as it’s free from the preservatives and chemicals that help produce stay fresh for long-distance transportation and extended periods of storage. Shopping at a farmers market can also help to reduce the carbon footprint that’s oftentimes associated with shipping food across state lines (sometimes thousands of miles)!
Aside from these factors, farmers’ markets are also a great way for the community to gather and learn more about food. When speaking to the farmer one-on-one, you can ask questions and hear about the process of where your food comes from — from planting to harvesting.
