6 Safety Tips to Prevent House Fires

National Fire Safety Week is a way to spotlight attention on promoting fire safety and prevention.

Here are 6 helpful safety tips to prevent fires all year long:

    1. Install and maintain a working smoke alarm outside bedrooms. Remember to change the battery at least once a year.

    1. Designate two escape routes from each bedroom. Be sure to practice them with children regularly.

    1. If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately and have it repaired. Replace frayed or cracked electrical cords and don’t overload extension cords. They should not be run under rugs. Never tamper with the fuse box or use the improper size fuse.

    1. Teach kids that matches, lighters and candles are tools, not toys. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet.

    1. Areas around furnace, oil burner, wood stove, and other heat-generating equipment should be clear of debris, combustible materials, and rags.

  1. The National Fire Protection Agency suggests an annual cleaning of your fireplace/chimney.
