16 Events in the Ann Arbor Area to Attend June 2021

June brings us countless wonderful things, including the official first day of summer, Father’s Day and Ann Arbor’s annual festival season! While several events have been canceled or postponed due to the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, there are still plenty of socially distanced things to do over the next few weeks.
To help you plan for the month ahead, we’ve rounded up some exciting events in the A2 area this month, from summer festivals to concerts, and 5Ks to food pop-ups. Here’s everything you need to do in Ann Arbor this month. Have a great June!

As the can’t-miss, arts-centered event of the summer, the 2021 Ann Arbor Summer Festival will include world-class entertainment in comedy, cinema, food, jazz, pop and rock, acoustic, spoken word, public radio, and so much more. To help keep you and your family safe, the festival has been altered slightly to include pop-ups and outdoor concerts rather than the usual bash at Top of the Park. Watercolor Succulents | Ann Arbor

Where: Online 
When: June 11, 6-8 p.m. 
Join the Ann Arbor Art Center and learn how to create lively watercolor succulents this month! This virtual class is a great option for beginners, with all supplies included in the registration price. You can pick up your supply kit at the Ann Arbor Art Center a week prior to the start of the class.
 
Where: Old West Side 
When: June 12-13 
Ann Arbor’s quirkiest art fair is back! During this iconic festival, local artists will set up in open studios, homes, porches, garages and yards around the charming historic Westside of Ann Arbor. During the festival, you’ll be able to purchase high-quality art and handmade crafts from local artists and creators. As with every community event in 2020 and 2021, masks and social distancing are highly encouraged.   
 

Community Celebrations

Ypsi Pride | Ypsilanti

Where: Downtown Ypsilanti 
When: June 4, 11, 18 & 25 
Celebrating its fifth year in 2021, Ypsi Pride is usually a block party of epic proportions on Ypsilanti’s South Washington Street. This year, due to COVID-19, instead of one large event, they’ll be throwing four smaller parties on four different nights. On June 4th, enjoy an art/drag/performance-themed night as a part of First Fridays Ypsilanti. On June 11th, it’s “Youth and Family Night.” June 18th will be “Vendor Highlight Night” and June 25th will be “Community Care Night”—all of which will be live-streamed online as well. This festival is celebrating its 26th year in 2021 with plenty of fun and entertainment! The lineup includes street and stage performances, dancing, local vendors and information booths, kid-friendly activities and more. Due to COVID-19, there is a chance this event may be canceled or rescheduled. We encourage you to visit their website for the most up-to-date information!

The Native Plant Expo & Marketplace offers residents a convenient location to shop for Michigan native plants from several Michigan native plant growers, learn how to establish and maintain native landscapes, and connect with companies specializing in planning native landscapes! Join Yankee Air Museum for an up-close experience with dozens of stunning classic vehicles at their third automobile invitational interspersed with historic aircrafts on the airport ramp at Willow Run! Juneteeth | Ann Arbor

Where: Downtown Ann Arbor 
When: June 19 
Juneteenth is an annual holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865 in several American states. In Ann Arbor, the celebration is hosted by The Ann Arbor Branch of the NAACPThey have not announced what they have store for 2021 yet, but you can learn more by visiting the A2 NAACP’s website.
 
Where: GrieveWell 
When: June 19, 1 p.m. 
GrieveWell hosts Ann Arbor’s only kite festival each year in June at Pioneer High School! This free community event shares the joy of the outdoors and the whimsy of kites, while remembering and honoring lost loved ones. Attendees include a mixture of community members, kite enthusiasts, GrieveWell supporters, and family members sharing the joy of the outdoors.
 

Kite and Rocket Day | Superior Township

Where: Fireman’s Park  
When: June 26, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Enjoy building air rocket launchers and kites at Fireman’s Park in Superior Township during this fun, family-friendly event! In the case of bad weather, the new date and time will be on July 3 at 11 a.m. Click here for all the information and to add it to your calendar! 
 

Sports

Lillie Parkrun | Ann Arbor

Where: Lillie Park 
When: Every Saturday at 8 a.m. 
The Lillie Parkrun is a weekly 5K that takes place at 8 a.m. every Saturday from May through September and at 9 a.m. October through April. It’s absolutely free (registration is still required for your first time) and run entirely by volunteers each week. Afterward, stick around to enjoy a post-run coffee at Biggby.
 

Island Lake Triathlon | Brighton

When: June 5, 7 a.m. 
Island Lake State Recreation Area is the home of the Island Lake Triathlon and is an epic training destination. Participants in this multi-sport event will swim the waters of Kent Lake, bike the park’s rolling hills, and run the final leg to the lakeside finish line. After the race, stick around for post-race festivities, which include a recovery meal and beer tent!

 

Suburban Chevrolet Ann Arbor Goddess 5K

Where: Big Portage Lake State Park 
When: June 26, 9:30 a.m.

This racing event includes fun pre-race warmups, a 5K course, a one-mile fun run and a 200-meter dash for kids. As a celebration of all the women in our community, you can run individually or run as a couple in the Mother-Daughter category, or invite your grandma to run in the Three Generations of Women category! When: June 27, 7:30 a.m. 
The first-ever all-women triathlon in Michigan, the Tri Goddess Tri is an event organized by women to celebrate women of all abilities. The event is held at the Portage Lake Unit of Waterloo State Recreation Area and includes several different distances, post-race snacks, an epic finisher’s medal and more. And when you register, a portion of proceeds benefit The Sparrow Freedom Project.
 

Food + Drink

Wines of the World 2021 | Northville

When: June 4, 6-9 p.m. 
The second annual Wines of the World wine tasting in Mill Race Historical Village will feature wine and spirit tastings, strolling food samplings, and musical entertainment! Enjoy wine and spirits donated by DWO members and sponsors and sample foods donated by area restaurants and caterers. The event will be held in full compliance with the guidelines of the CDC and the Michigan Department of Health, which includes mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing. 
 

Fish & Chips Pop-up | Dexter

When: June 9 & 30, 4-9 p.m. 
Golden, battered cod fish served with thick, salty chips (a.k.a. French fries) and a side of sauce? Count us in! Zingerman’s Cornman Farms is hosting two fish and chips pop-ups this month, where you can order online and enjoy contact-free pickup. Simply order your fish and chips online, pick it up at the farm, and pretend you’re ambling down London’s cobblestoned streets as you dive into one of its most iconic dishes.
