Summer is officially in full swing and it’s getting hot! One of the best ways to cool off, of course, is by sipping on a cold beverage. But while the first one that usually comes to mind is craft beer, we’ll do you one better: craft cold brew!
Cold brew has become the coffee drink of choice for many, as it offers a creamy taste that is low in acidity and high in caffeine. And even though we love sipping on any iced coffee drink all year long, summer is definitely the season for it! Below, we’ve listed some of our favorite options for cold brew around Ann Arbor. How many can you try before the season is over?
The team behind 19 Drips Coffee & Tea has always had a simple goal: bring the third-wave experience from Yemen to Ann Arbor, carefully crafting the finest coffee and tea for the A2 community. Their cold brew is no exception! Strong and smooth, this cold coffee drink can be enjoyed slightly sweetened with one of their many syrups and with any milk of your choosing.
Argus Farm Stop is basically a year-round farmers’ market with two locations in the Ann Arbor area. Their mission is to grow the local agricultural community by providing a place where local farms can sell their produce and other goods to consumers year-round. Their cafe’s cold brew is always good, but this summer, they’re offering it mixed with vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup for a delicious French toast flavor you’ll love!
Black Diesel is a picturesque little cafe that brews coffees worthy of your Instagram feed. Their cold brew can be customized using various milks— including whole, skim, almond, unsweetened almond, soy, coconut, and oat—as well as with their extensive list of syrups and sauces! Black Diesel baristas are more than happy to come up with unique combinations and create something special for every customer. Pair your cold brew with an item from their selection of sweet and savory crepes, house-made waffles, or Zingerman’s Bakehouse baked goods!
This coffee bar and tap house is a Ypsi favorite and their cold brew is legendary! They serve it any way you can imagine: plain, topped with condensed milk, boozy and even mixed with lemonade. You can pick one up on the rocks at their Ypsilanti coffeehouse any day of the week. While you’re there, grab a few pre-packaged bottles for your fridge!

The Grotto aims to be “everyone’s watering hole”—and we think it’s safe to say they’ve accomplished their goal! This lively hotspot features 36 constantly rotating craft beer taps; shelves of world-class spirits; an excellent wine list; rotating cocktails; and several non-alcoholic options like nitro cold brew from local coffee shops on tap.
Roasting the coffee of choice of many of our favorite coffee shops in Ann Arbor and around the state, Hyperion is an outstanding roaster in Ypsilanti. Featured in Phaidon’s Where to Drink Coffee as one of the best of the Midwest, Hyperion is making waves in the industry. We definitely recommend stepping through that giant green door and into your new coffee paradise. Their cold brew is perfect served by itself or mixed with lemonade—yes, you read that right!—as a Nitro Shandy.
Born from a love of French culture, Le Bon Macaron is a local, family business that offers two of the most charming cafés in Michigan: one in Grand Rapids and one in downtown Ann Arbor. On the menu, you’ll find delicious cold brew along with French press coffee and espresso from Rowster Coffee, fresh scones made daily, ice cream sundaes, French and Italian sodas made with handcrafted fruit puree and, of course, the macarons that have made them famous.
Every Mighty Good Coffee beverage starts with beans from select farms, mills and co-ops. Then, they’re roasted in small batches and packaged to preserve freshness. Their cold brew—offered at their Bean Shop—is a local favorite. It’s so popular, in fact, that they now sell it in bottled form! Stop by and pick up a few bottles or grab their 32-ounce concentrate so you can make your own coffee concoctions at home.
For a boozy coffee option, head to Nightcap, one of our favorite cocktail bars in the city! They offer Hyperion Coffee cold brew in the form of cocktails, shots and all by itself. Keep an eye on their to–go cocktail menu, where they will often offer their popular drinks in canned form for curbside pickup.
Deeply local RoosRoast is the coffee headquarters for freshly roasted beans in Ann Arbor. You can try their famous coffee for yourself at either of their locations in Ann Arbor or pick up a few bags of beans year–round at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market! One of the most popular items on their menu is their cold brew, which you can get in a single serving over ice or in a half gallon to take home. Don’t miss their hot chocolate cold brew that puts a caffeine-infused twist on the classic cold-weather drink!
Even if you aren’t from Ann Arbor, you may have heard of Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea, a popular coffee chain that got its start right here. We’ve talked plenty about their many offerings, from their tea to their frozen drinks and more, but their cold brew is nothing less than iconic. Enjoy it three ways: Dirty (with expresso, chocolate sauce and cream), Dreamy (vanilla syrup and cream) or Straight Up (nothing added). Locals love their cold brew so much that Sweetwaters recently started offering Dreamy Cold Brew Kits, where you get enough cold brew and toppings for six drinks to enjoy at home.
Zingerman’s Coffee Co. is a wholesale roaster supplying cafes, restaurants and businesses all over the region, but they also offer their own coffees at the Zingerman’s Coffee Bar at Zingerman’s Southside Producers row.
