We’ve rounded up some of our favorite spring home decorating ideas, tips and tricks so that you can incorporate the light, open and new feeling of spring into your home. We can’t wait to see what you do with your decor this season!

Declutter

Declutter

‘Tis the season for fresh starts and clean homes! While decluttering isn’t necessarily a way to decorate your home, it is a key element to popular spring décor trends. Before you get started on adding fresh flowers, candles and new throw pillows to your home, take a day or two to really deep clean your space. Put away your winter decorations, take a load of donations to a local thrift store, and dust in those nooks and crannies you don’t normally get to. Trust us, you’ll feel so much better about your home once you do!

Rearrange the furniture

In the same vein of decluttering, rearranging your furniture is the perfect way to wipe the slate clean and start anew! After you’ve finished cleaning, take a moment to consider how your space is laid out. Is there a better place for your TV or couch? What about moving your bed to the opposite wall? The possibilities are endless when it comes to rearranging spaces!

Liven things up with fresh flowers and plants

One of the easiest ways to invite spring into your home is by incorporating fresh flowers and plants! Adding just a few new bouquets and hints of greenery can breathe life into your home and make it feel lighter and more open. We recommend visiting a local florist in the Ann Arbor area to get your natural fix! Click here for a list of our favorites.

Swap out your candles

Now that winter is coming to a closeit’s time to put away the scents of cinnamon, cloves, evergreen and cranberries to make way for fresher scents like lavender, rosemary, clean linen and more. Place a few in every room, that way when Michigan snow comes, you can still invite the smell of a light, spring breeze throughout your home—without ever having to open the windows!

Lighten up your home

Spring means bright white, pastels and calming neutrals. So, after you’ve packed up the dark, warm colors of the holiday season, try incorporating a few lighter colors into the mix. This can be as simple as making little styling tweaks to coffee and accent tables, shelves, your mantel and countertops. Even something as small as a pretty dishtowel draped over the sink or some new, lighter throw pillows on the couch can add a feeling of freshness to your home.

Update your bedding

Spring is all about awakening, so this is the perfect time of year to wake up in your bedroom with some new bedding! Refresh your room by switching out your heavy winter blankets, throws and pillows with slightly lighter weight and lighter colored linens. If you’re on the hunt for some local bedding, check out FOUND, where you can find new, spring-themed throws, pillows and more for your bedroom!

Add some pops of pastels

We can’t think about spring without thinking about the light blues, pinks and yellows that come with it. We’re not suggesting you turn your home into a house-sized Easter egg, but incorporating small pastel details can really add a new level of spring freshness to your spaces! Throw pillows, knick knacks, curtains and dish towels all provide an opportunity to add pops of colors to your home without going overboard.

Add in some baskets

Amidst all your decluttering, you’ve probably found a few things that just don’t fit into your closets or in drawers. Luckily, wicker, rope and felt baskets exist for this very purpose! Doubling as décor and storage, baskets are great ways to keep your clutter styled and out of the way. Place a few in every room and use them to store your extra blankets, books, magazines, junk mail and pretty much anything else you can think of!

Switch out your wreath

We can’t forget about the front door wreath! Wreaths or other types of front door decorations actually help set the tone for your entire home’s décor, since it’s one of the first things guests will see when they step inside. Make sure to make a good first impression with a floral masterpiece—either fake or real, depending on your preference—that will greet anyone who passes your front door.

Refresh forgotten spaces

We all have forgotten spaces in our housesbare tables, empty corners, neglected lengths of walls. If you’ve found a few that you want to fill, tall green plants, blanket ladders, stacks of books, baskets and small accent tables are all great choices! Not only will they fill in those abandoned areas, but the simple addition of a few pieces can make a space look and feel completely brand new.

Update your artwork

Changing out your wall art is one of the easiest ways to completely change the tone of any room. Take down any dark and warm colors donning your walls and replace them with pretty pinks, mustard yellows, light oranges and even some baby blues, which will make your space feel even bigger and lighter than it was before!

Perk up your workspace

Due to COVID-19, many Ann Arbor locals are still working from home. If that’s you, take some time this season to perk up your workspace! If you’ve been roughing it at the dining room table for more than a year, make room for a dedicated office space. Or, if you’re lucky enough to have your own office, pep it up with some fresh flowers, a more comfortable desk chair, comfy textures or new pastel artwork.

Use the farmers’ market to your advantage

Here in Ann Arbor, we’re blessed with a year-round farmers’ market! But while you can visit in even the coldest of months, spring and summer is when it really shines, offering goodies from local businesses and vendors from all across Michigan. If you can, stop by (they are currently offering curbside pickup!) and grab some plants, baskets of veggies and even small décor pieces that will help add a farm-fresh feel to any space.

Don’t forget the patio

If you’re lucky enough to have a back patio or deck, don’t neglect it this spring! Since you’ll definitely want to enjoy it during the warmer months this year, take some time to turn it into a calming outdoor retreat. Invest in some outdoor furniture, pillows, rugs and more. That way you always have a calming, peaceful spring oasis to escape to on cool mornings or after a long day.
