This week we are featuring Jean Wedemeyer’s new listing –208 South Street, Chelsea MI,48118
Q. Can you describe the architectural style of the home?
This 137-year old Queen Anne Victorian is a wonderful piece of Chelsea history. Built in 1883 as the home of Frank P. Glazier and his family, 208 South Street over the years passed through multiple owners and even spent several years carved up into 5 separate apartments. Now it is once again a single-family home. Over the past 14 years the current owners have returned it to its original pristine condition, upgraded with new, modern systems – plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roof, copper gutters and energy efficient foam insulation behind the walls.
Q. What distinctive features set this home apart?
Three floors of beautifully restored and, where necessary, recreated living space. Every room is exceptional – detailed woodwork, hardware, period lighting, and exquisite wallcoverings. French doors, pocket doors, and fireplaces help define the main floor spaces and each room has been restored with its original parquet floor pattern and wood type. The huge wrap-around porch is a marvel and perfect for outdoor gatherings; the new 3-car garage is as attractive as it is functional – there is a 700 SF multipurpose room above.
Q. What are the advantages of the location & neighborhood?
Great location! Just a block from Main Street in wonderful downtown Chelsea and all that it offers: shops, restaurants, The Purple Rose Theater, library, and medical services.
Q. Have there been any recent renovations or upgrades?
The new kitchen features a dual fuel Aga stove, Sub-Zero fridge, custom-made cabinets, built-in banquette, tin ceiling, and butler’s pantry.
The main staircase in the foyer and a back stairway each lead to a roomy, dedicated landing on the second floor. Here, 4 bedrooms including a large master have been restored, each with their original, specific wood scheme. The master suite has a sitting area, large new bath, and walk-in-closet. The remaining 3 bedrooms share a large new bath recreated in the style of the period.
Q. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about the home?
The 3rd floor has an additional bedroom and full bath, and best of all, a large playroom, and a small playroom in the cupola, all finished in tongue and groove Douglas fir. The woodwork and windows are really something else.208 South Street. Lovingly, thoughtfully, and expertly restored. Not a detail missed and ready for its next owner.
